Home Pastors, Churches and Political Activity

The following is from LIBERTY COUNCIL (http://www.lc.org) - A NATIONWIDE PUBLIC INTEREST RELIGIOUS CIVIL LIBERTIES LAW FIRM.

There is an ongoing struggle for the soul of America.

Many people look to pastors and Christian ministry leaders for guidance on important moral and social issues.

Some people and organizations want pastors and Christian ministry leaders to remain silent while Rome burns. In the past some pastors and ministry leaders have received unsolicited letters making erroneous statements, which state that pastors may not address the views of political candidates and may not preach about biblical or moral issues because they are “political.”

Sometimes these letters, or statements in the media, claim that churches will lose tax exemption if pastors speak about political or moral issues. Such claims are false and are mere scare tactics designed to silence Christian viewpoints.

Do not be confused or intimated by such claims.

"[T]he time has come that Christians must vote for honest men and take
consistent ground in politics or the Lord will curse them... Christians have been
exceedingly guilty in this matter. But the time has come when they must act
differently... Christians seem to act as if they thought God did not see what
they do in politics. But I tell you He does see it - and He will bless or curse
this nation according to the course they [Christians] take [in politics]."

Charles G. Finney, Lectures on Revivals of Religion, 1868.

"Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he
is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual – or at least
that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn
trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country."

Samuel Adams, Boston Gazette, April 16, 1781.

Churches and other nonprofit organizations can clearly be involved in the political process. It would literally be impossible for such organizations not to be involved in the political process because the viewpoints and issues advocated by churches and nonprofit organizations naturally have political consequences. To avoid the political process is to limit the effectiveness of churches and nonprofit organizations. The United States Supreme Court has recognized that “churches frequently take strong positions on public issues including...vigorous advocacy of legal or constitutional positions. Of course, churches as much as secular bodies and private citizens have that right.” Walz v. Tax Commission, 397 U.S. 664, 670 (1970).

Church bulletin inserts - ready to print!

"...liberal groups seek to silence pastors and churches, I would encourage pastors to throw off their muzzle and pick up a megaphone. It’s time pastors and churches became the moral conscience of the community."

I would encourage all Conservatives to read the material provided here by the Liberty Council to understand a) how liberals and progressives have tried (successfully I might add) to prohibit our Pastors and Churches from speaking about and participating in the issues and elections of the day. Further, I would suggest that you PROACTIVELY share this information with your Pastors and Churches so that they understand 'their rights' and finally ask your Pastors and Churches to get involved as there is an ongoing struggle for the soul of America.

WE ALL MUST TAKE A STAND FOR OUR COUNTRY.
